Capture The Vision

A Major Pictorial Initiative by the Ballarat Historical Society

What

The Capture The Vision photography Project sets out to reclaim hitherto uncollected images of Ballarat, particularly the years from 1940 until now, and to institute a program for the capture and collection of images of the on-going day-to-day life of Ballarat and to preserve and expand Ballarat’s photographic heritage.

In 2004, a Significance Assessment Survey conducted by historian Stella Barber, highlighted the value and uniqueness of the photographic collections of both the Gold Museum and the Ballarat Historical Society. The survey also noted that there was a noticeable decline in the content of both collections from the 1950’s onwards.

The Project has been set up with two distinct facets:

  1. Got The Picture?
This aims to collect, for copying or donation, images of Ballarat’s past, with the emphasis on those images captured during the past 50 years.

  2. Today For Tomorrow

This engages the enthusiasm and skills of volunteer photographers throughout Ballarat in capturing images of day-to-day life and the changes of streetscapes, buildings, public facilities and events.
This facet naturally seeks to utilise the capabilities of digital capture technology as well as movie and conventional photography.

Images of the Past could come from anywhere. Visitors and tourists to Ballarat may have possible treasures! Forgotten family photo repositories is another source.
