The Ballarat Historical Society was formed in 1933 as a not-for-profit organisation. Its aims are to preserve and store items of local historical importance and to encourage and facilitate research into the history of Ballarat.

Since 1981 the Society’s collection has been cared for and housed in the Ballarat Gold Museum, now the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections, where it forms an important part of the Centre's overall collection. The collection can now be searched on-line by going to the Sovereign Hill website (www.sovereignhill.com.au), scroll down to Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections and follow the search prompts.

Meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month at 7:00 pm.

Meetings are normally held at the Ballarat North Community Centre (BNCC) on the corner of Walker and Armstrong Streets, Ballarat North. Members will be notified by email of any changes to this arrangement. On occasion meetings are replaced with excursions or walking tours.
